pictures of peoples from Bukovina

These pictures are interesting snapshots in time of the different ethnic groups that lived in Bukovina in the late 19th century and early 20th century.... the quality of the old photos show clothing the different groups wore which were often distinct, although some of the groups' costumes were quite similar, such as the Romanians and the Ukrainian people. The old naming style is also mentioned alongside of the modern english equivalent for the different cultures. Many of these peoples lived in Chernivtsi (Chernovchy) and other districts in Bukovina at the same time throughout different parts of history.

This is a picture of Huzulen or Hutsuls, which are a subgroup of Ukrainians that are from western Ukraine.

 

This is a picture of Lippowaner or Lipovan men. Lipovans have also been known as "Old Believers", having originated in Russia and migrating in the middle ages due to persecution after church schism in the Russian Orthodox Church. Their dialect might be old russian influenced by old church slavonic.

This is a picture of Ungarn or Hungarian men.

These are Schwaben or German men, their suits are quite the contrast to the more eastern and slavic peoples.

These are Juden or Jewish men.

These are Ziguener men which have also been known as Gypsy or more correctly in modern times as Roma.
